I don't really believe most claims of abuse because the threshold for calling something abusive is so low. Physical and sexual abuse is pretty clear, but verbal and emotional abuse is extremely foggy. To the point that a therapist tried to convince me that my mother being bad at conveying wishes and intentions was emotional abuse.

Wondering if there is much of a difference between step families and traditional nuclear intact families? I know of situations where not all of the children of a natural parent had the same view of the parenting and family. Sometimes the estranged have their own issues and cause issues.

I have went no contact with my mom a little over ago. She is toxic to my mental and emotional health. After 43 years I finally noticed that the way she talked to me and more importantly the way she talked about me was not normal. After educating myself for a couple years on boundaries, self healing and getting to know myself a little more I finally told her that she is no longer allowed to talk to me the way she does. That I love her and hope one day we are able to work on our relationship but for now I’m working on me.

After years of trying to talk to her and typing a letter with clear bullet points, she would literally scream at me, "Why won't you tell me what I did wrong!?" She took forgivness as acceptance and would do the same thing again. The last thing she ever screamed at me was that I had to forgive her so she could go to heaven. That, to me, made it very clear that she knew she was wrong. The last words sbe heard from me were, "If you want forgiveness, ask Jesus. That's not my job." Best decision I ever made.

There's something wrong with your audio. I had a hard time figuring out what you were saying sometimes. And I'm really hoping you didn't ruin your audio track on purpose out of some misguided trigger idea. It actually makes the word ABUSE more glaringly apparent when you do that... it sticks out in your mind & you hear it echoing in your thoughts b/c you highlighted it by singling out the word in this way. My advice: stop that now. It's supremely unhelpful and just makes you hard to hear on top of it

anarchist hierarchy perspective: I think the role of parenting in modern society can easily lead to abuse without any intention by the nature of parenting being something that gives them an extreme amount of control and responsibility, I think a lot about my own experiences and how the nuclear family parenting has a bunch of blind spots and how they were raised is their normative idea of what parenting is, which leads to them thinking such harmful behaviors as acceptable. I think a lot about how child autonomy and rights alongside communal parenting structures that do not center biological connections as the main factor in who has control over a child would allow for a healthier connection and a better understanding of what is acceptable behavior for the child than the potential harm from an unhealthy family structure that leads to the eventual estrangement where it's clear a parent has no intent to respect the feelings of the child, the "are you talking back to me" doesn't end when you become an adult, they just outright reject your feelings. Even for people who have healthy family connections, it also would be a benefit to understand how more people work and give us a better sense of connection and community.

basically though the expecting of a child to take responsibility of their role when all of the power in the equation is of the parent or the older sibiling or whatever else is as bs as billionaires, politicians and police criticizing the way in which people act out to signal dissent with how the established order is, there's parallels between that and punishment and a lack of accountability.

whatabout when a teacher pushes trans onto a child over uears and years and then the child comes out as trans even thoughnthey never were interested innthe first place and when a parent rejects it, the parent is the bad guy. i would see that as a 3rd party changing the mind of a child or young adult againat the parents teachings. i would say if over yeard and hears the young adult wants that ,then thats fine. but a permenant change of self from a short term relationship with a "really cool, smart, ally teacher" is crazyness.

I am not physically estranged from my mother, but I am emotionally estranged from her. It is a long story, but I have always felt she is selfish and didn't really want the responsibility of children but had them anyway. Once my parents divorced, we became our grandparents' problems. Lucky for us, they were great. She loves me in her own way. However, she is self-centered, and I learned very early on that I should not depend on her. I can only talk to her for so long before she says something that sets my teeth on edge. For this reason, we rarely talk because I make the majority of the effort in our relationship, and I am over it. We are not friends. I am easily annoyed by her antics, so it is best if we keep the contact to a minimum.
